Ground Fault Interrupters and Arc Fault Breakers Installed by Cravens Electric!

Your building circuit breaker or fuse-box is limited in exactly what kind of dangerous electrical fault it can detect. The National Electric Code requires ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to be installed when an outlet is placed near water, or for certain electrical applications where an excess current draw may create problems.

GFCI outlets and breakers prevent dangerous situations that can often lead to injury through equipment use or from some other issue. A properly installed GFCI saves you from an electric shock in the case of a grounding fault, and reduces the risk of house-fires due to electrical faults.

Arc Fault Breakers

An arc fault breaker, or arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) as they are more commonly called, is a type of ground fault circuit breaker which is designed to prevent electrical fires by detecting electrical arcs within your electrical system and then forcing the arc fault breaker interrupter to open the circuit thus preventing a fire.

The AFCI must be able to determine whether the arc is one that would naturally occur during the normal operation of plugs, switches, motors and the like, or if the arc is caused by a real hazard such as a severed wire in your wall or a light cord that has been accidentally sliced, exposing bare wires. There may be instances where you drill through a wall, or hang a picture and pierce or cut a wire. Any time an arc is detected in the line, the arc fault interrupter will disengage the circuit in the panel box.

Arc faults in a home are one of the leading causes for household fires. Each year in the United States, over 40,000 fires are attributed to home electrical wiring. These fires result in over 350 deaths and over 1,400 injuries each year. Remember to test your GFCI and AFCI outlets and breakers every month by pressing the “test” button!

We carry many common brands of arc fault breakers on our trucks from popular companies like Square D and Siemens. If you live in the Houston area and need an arc fault breaker installed, call Cravens Electric.
